In February 2017, Steve was thrilled to provide his expertise to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for their pilot project “Training Dogs To Live With Koalas”.

We have to look after our iconic Koala so it is important we teach our dogs how to live with Koalas.

Dog attacks on Koalas are one of three main causes for the ongoing decline on the local koala population around Port Macquarie, and the program aimed to reduce these attacks through specialist training.

The correct training of the dogs in the community was critical to this project so after a specific selection process, Steve trained dog instructors on advanced scientific training methods so that they could then train both the dogs and the handlers in the Port Macquarie region.

And in September, the first group of local dog owners and their beloved pooches who participated in the ‘Training Dogs To Live With Koalas’ program were put through their paces at a final assessment at a special event that was attended by media including tv, radio and press.

The local trainers and participating families should be commended, with all dogs displaying excellent obedience in their final assessments proving the success of the pilot program.

The K9 Koala Program was an initiative organised by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in partnership with the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Kennel & Obedience Club.
